ETIAS Travel Authorisation Photo Guide 2025/2026
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will require non-EU visa-exempt travellers to obtain pre-travel authorisation before entering the Schengen Area. This guide explains what digital photograph you will need, how ETIAS photo requirements compare to ESTA, the UK ETA, and the Canada eTA, and what to prepare before the system goes live.
ETIAS is not yet live
As of mid-2025, ETIAS has not launched. The planned rollout window is 2025/2026, but no confirmed date has been announced. Always check the official eu-LISA website (eulisa.europa.eu) or the European Commission ETIAS information page for the current launch status before making travel plans.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is a pre-travel screening requirement being introduced by the European Union. It applies to nationals of countries that currently have visa-free access to the Schengen Area, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
ETIAS is not a visa. It is a travel authorisation — a security check carried out before you board your flight, similar to the US ESTA or the UK ETA. Once approved, an ETIAS authorisation will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and will allow multiple entries into the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period).
The system is operated by eu-LISA (the EU Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice) in conjunction with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).
ETIAS Digital Photo Requirements
The ETIAS application is submitted online via the official ETIAS portal. You will be required to upload a digital biometric photograph as part of the application. Based on the published ICAO and EU biometric standards that ETIAS follows, the photo requirements are:
- Dimensions: 35mm wide × 45mm tall (ICAO biometric standard), at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for a sharp digital image.
- Background: Plain white or light plain background. No shadows, patterns, or colour gradients.
- Expression: Neutral. Mouth closed. Both eyes fully open and directed at the camera.
- Glasses: Not permitted. ICAO standards, which ETIAS follows, prohibit glasses in biometric photographs.
- File format: JPEG (.jpg). Check the ETIAS portal for exact file size limits at the time of application.
- Head coverings: Permitted only for religious or medical reasons, provided the full face from chin to crown is fully visible.
- Recency: The photo should represent your current appearance. Take it as close to your application date as possible.
- No retouching: Digital filters, beauty retouching, or any alterations to your appearance are not permitted.
The specifications above are based on published ICAO and EU biometric documentation. Verify the exact requirements on the official ETIAS portal when it opens.
ETIAS vs ESTA, ETA, and eTA: System Comparison
| System | Region | Photo required | Validity | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ETIAS | Schengen Area (26 countries) | Digital ICAO 35×45mm, JPEG | 3 years / passport expiry | Not yet launched (planned 2025/2026) |
| ESTA (USA) | United States | Digital ICAO, online upload | 2 years / passport expiry | Live |
| eTA (Canada) | Canada (air entry) | No photo required | 5 years / passport expiry | Live |
| ETA (UK) | United Kingdom | Digital selfie via UKVI app | 2 years / passport expiry | Live |
| ETA (Australia) | Australia | No photo required | 1 year (multiple entry) | Live |
Validity periods and status correct as of May 2026. Always verify with the official authority before travel.
Who Needs ETIAS?
ETIAS applies to nationals of countries that currently travel visa-free to the Schengen Area. This includes citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, and many others.
The following travellers are exempt from ETIAS:
- EU, EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), and Swiss citizens.
- Nationals of countries that already require a Schengen visa (ETIAS does not replace the visa requirement).
- Holders of a valid Schengen long-stay visa, residence permit, or EU long-term residence permit.
Children under 18 and adults over 70 may benefit from a reduced ETIAS fee. Consult the European Commission ETIAS information page for the current fee schedule.
How to Prepare Your ETIAS Photo
Because ETIAS is a digital application with a photo upload, a clean, correctly formatted ICAO biometric photo is essential. Follow these steps to prepare:
- Use a plain white or very light plain background. Avoid shadows, patterns, and coloured walls. A white wall with even lighting works well.
- Ensure even, front-facing lighting. Natural light from a window in front of you (not behind you) is ideal. Avoid harsh flash shadows on the face or background.
- Face the camera directly. Keep your head upright, look straight into the lens, and maintain a neutral expression with your mouth closed.
- Remove glasses. ICAO standards prohibit eyewear in biometric photos.
- Use a biometric photo tool to verify the crop and dimensions. The face should occupy the correct proportion of the frame — typically 70–80% of the photo height from chin to crown.
- Export as JPEG and check that the file size is within the limits specified on the ETIAS portal at the time of application.
Frequently Asked Questions
What photo do I need for ETIAS?
ETIAS requires a digital biometric photograph following the ICAO standard: 35×45mm at 300 dpi or higher, white or light background, neutral expression, both eyes fully open, no glasses. The file must be submitted in JPEG format within the specified file-size limits on the ETIAS application portal. Always verify the current requirements on the official eu-LISA or European Commission ETIAS information pages at the time of your application.
Is ETIAS live yet?
As of mid-2025, ETIAS has not yet launched. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System was originally planned for 2022, then deferred multiple times. The current planned rollout window is 2025/2026, but no confirmed launch date has been announced. Check the official eu-LISA website (eulisa.europa.eu) or the European Commission ETIAS information page for the latest status.
Who needs ETIAS?
ETIAS will apply to nationals of countries that currently have visa-free access to the Schengen Area — for example, citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and many others. Nationals of countries that already require a Schengen visa are not eligible for ETIAS. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens do not need ETIAS to enter the Schengen Area.
How does ETIAS differ from ESTA?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) and ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization, USA) are both pre-travel security screening systems for visa-exempt travellers. ETIAS covers the Schengen Area (26 European countries), while ESTA applies to entry to the United States. Both require a digital photograph meeting ICAO biometric standards, an online application, and a fee. ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries.
How does ETIAS compare to the UK ETA and Canada eTA?
The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) and Canada eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) are similar pre-screening systems. The UK ETA requires a digital selfie taken via the UKVI app for facial verification, while the Canada eTA does not require a photo — it links to your passport. ETIAS will require an uploaded biometric photograph. All three systems are fee-based, online, and tied to your passport number.
Can I use a smartphone photo for my ETIAS application?
A smartphone photo may be technically submitted if it meets the ICAO biometric standards: correct dimensions, white or light plain background, neutral expression, no glasses, even lighting, and saved as JPEG within the file-size limits. Using a dedicated biometric photo tool ensures the head size, background, and file specifications are correct before you upload. A rejected photo can delay your ETIAS approval.
ETIAS requirements are based on published ICAO and EU biometric documentation. The system has not yet launched as of mid-2025. Always verify current requirements on the official eu-LISA website (eulisa.europa.eu) and the European Commission ETIAS information page. Requirements may change before or after the system goes live.
