This guide also explains the separate e-Visa photo format, PSK centre processes, and the ongoing ePassport rollout in India.

Indian passport photos submitted via the Passport Seva Online portal or at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) must meet the following requirements:
Passport applications in India are processed through the Passport Seva Online portal (passportindia.gov.in), with in-person appointments at a PSK or POPSK. You bring two recent printed passport-size photos (35×45mm) to your appointment. The Passport Officer verifies your documents including the photos.
India has been rolling out biometric ePassports with IC chips that store facial biometric data. The ePassport uses the same 35×45mm photo format — the chip data is derived from the photo submitted with your application. Biometric face recognition is used at automated e-gates in Indian airports and at international borders.
Passport validity periods are: 10 years for adults (15 and over) and 5 years (or until age 18, whichever is earlier) for minors.
Religious head coverings — including hijabs, turbans, dupattas, and other faith-based headwear — are permitted in Indian passport photos, provided the following conditions are met:
Fashion headwear (hats, caps, beanies) is not permitted. Only genuine religious or medical head coverings are accepted.
This is one of the most common sources of confusion for Indian document applications. The two formats are not interchangeable:
Both require a white background, neutral expression, and no glasses. Submitting the wrong size will cause your application to be rejected.
Children's passport photos follow the same 35×45mm requirements as adult photos. For babies and very young children:
Minors under 15 receive a passport valid for 5 years (or until age 18, whichever is earlier). A fresh photo meeting current MEA requirements is needed at every renewal.
| Country | Size | Head height | Background | Max photo age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India | 35×45mm | 25–35mm | Plain white | 6 months |
| Singapore | 35×45mm | 25–35mm | White only | 6 months |
| Australia | 35×45mm | 32–36mm | White or light grey | 6 months |
| United Kingdom | 35×45mm | 29–34mm | Cream or light grey | 6 months |
| Germany | 35×45mm | 32–36mm | White or light grey | 6 months |
Always verify current requirements with the official authority before submitting your application.
Indian passport photos must be 35×45mm (width × height) with the head (chin to crown) occupying 25–35mm of the total height. This follows the ICAO biometric standard used in most countries worldwide.
No. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Passport Seva require passport photos without glasses, in line with the ICAO biometric standard. This applies to prescription glasses, reading glasses, and sunglasses.
Indian passport photos must be printed at a minimum of 300 DPI on photo-quality paper. The photo must be in sharp focus, with natural skin tones and no digital retouching or filters applied.
Religious head coverings (such as a hijab, turban, or dupatta) are permitted, provided the full face from chin to hairline is clearly visible. Shadows on the face caused by the covering are not acceptable.
An Indian passport application uses a 35×45mm ICAO rectangular photo. An Indian e-Visa application requires a 2×2 inch (51×51mm) square photo. Do not submit the wrong size for either application.
Children's passport photos follow the same 35×45mm requirements. For minors under 15, the passport is valid for 5 years (or until age 18, whichever comes first) and a new photo is required at each renewal. Babies' eyes do not need to be fully open, but the face must be clearly visible.
Always verify current requirements with the official authority — Ministry of External Affairs India (passportindia.gov.in) or your nearest Passport Seva Kendra. This guide is for informational purposes only.
