Multiple Entry Visa Photo Requirements
Whether your visa allows a single entry or ten, the biometric photo requirements are the same. Multiple entry visas — including the Schengen Type C multiple entry, US B1/B2, and UK Standard Visitor — use identical photo specifications to their single entry counterparts. What changes between countries is the format itself: the US and UK use non-ICAO sizes that are not interchangeable with the standard 35×45mm used across most of Europe and Asia.
Single entry vs. multiple entry: the photo spec does not change
Consulates and visa application centres apply the same biometric photo standard regardless of whether you are applying for a single, double, or multiple entry visa. The entry category affects your visa — not the photo requirement.
Photo Specifications by Visa Type
| Visa | Category | Photo Size | Background | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Schengen (Type C) | Multiple or Single Entry | 35×45mm (ICAO) | White or off-white | Same spec for all entry categories; all 27 Schengen countries |
| US B1/B2 | Multiple or Single Entry | 51×51mm (2×2 inch) | White or off-white | Non-ICAO — not interchangeable with 35×45mm |
| UK Standard Visitor | Multiple or Single Entry | 45×35mm (portrait) | Cream or light grey | Non-ICAO — inverted proportions vs. ICAO; same as UK passport photo |
| Canada (TRV) | Multiple or Single Entry | 50×70mm | White | Non-ICAO — largest standard format; same spec as Canadian passport |
| Australia (Visitor) | Multiple or Single Entry | 35×45mm (ICAO) | White or light grey | ICAO standard; digital upload via ImmiAccount |
| Schengen (Type D, National) | Long-stay / Work | 35×45mm (ICAO) | White or off-white | Same ICAO spec as Type C Schengen visa |
Schengen Multiple Entry Visa
The Schengen multiple entry visa (Type C) uses the standard ICAO 35×45mm format with a white or off-white background. The specification is identical for single entry (one journey), double entry (two journeys), and multiple entry (unrestricted journeys within the visa period) categories.
All 27 Schengen member states apply the same photo standard. A compliant ICAO photo prepared for a German consulate will be accepted at a French, Italian, or Dutch consulate without modification. The photo must have been taken within 6 months of the application date.
US B1/B2: Non-ICAO 51×51mm Format
The US B1/B2 visa (tourist and business) requires a 51×51mm (2×2 inch) photo — not the 35×45mm ICAO format. This applies to both single and multiple entry categories. The background must be white or off-white, and the photo must be taken within 6 months. A standard European passport photo cannot be substituted.
UK Standard Visitor: 45×35mm Portrait Format
The UK Standard Visitor visa requires a 45×35mm portrait photo — taller than it is wide, which is the opposite orientation to the ICAO 35×45mm. This is the same format as the UK passport photo. The background should be cream or light grey. This format applies to single, multiple, and long-term UK Standard Visitor visas.
Reusing Photos for Multiple Applications
If you plan to apply for multiple visas within a short period, you can reuse the same digital photo file provided it falls within the 6-month recency window for each application and your appearance has not changed significantly.
How long are photos valid? Most consulates and visa authorities accept photos taken within the last 6 months from the application submission date. A photo taken on 1 January can be used for applications submitted up to 30 June of the same year. After that, a new photo is required.
Storing digital photos for reuse: Save the original high-resolution JPEG in sRGB colour space with the capture date in the filename (e.g. passport-photo-2026-05-29.jpg). Keep separate pre-cropped versions for each format you need: 35×45mm for Schengen, 51×51mm for US, 45×35mm for UK, 50×70mm for Canada. Label each file clearly so you do not submit the wrong size to the wrong portal.
Bulk photo sessions: If you anticipate applying for multiple visas, consider taking a batch of photos at one session. Have a compliant digital file prepared along with several printed copies in the correct size. Printed visa photos for consulate submission are typically required at the standard format for each country.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the photo requirements different for a multiple entry visa?
No. The biometric photo specifications for multiple entry visas are identical to those for single entry visas. The difference between single and multiple entry is a visa category distinction, not a photo specification change.
How long is a visa photo valid for multiple applications?
Most visa-issuing authorities accept photos taken within the last 6 months. If you plan to apply for multiple visas within that window, you can reuse the same photo — provided your appearance has not changed significantly and the photo was taken within 6 months of each application date.
What size photo is required for a US B1/B2 multiple entry visa?
The US B1/B2 visa — whether single or multiple entry — requires a 51×51mm (2×2 inch) photo, not the ICAO 35×45mm format used in most other countries. The background must be white or off-white, and the photo must have been taken within 6 months.
What photo do I need for a UK Standard Visitor visa?
The UK Standard Visitor visa uses a 45×35mm portrait format — the same as the UK passport photo. This is a non-standard format: taller than wide, unlike the ICAO 35×45mm. Both single and multiple entry UK Standard Visitor visas use the same 45×35mm specification.
Can I use the same photo for a Schengen visa and a UK visa?
No. The Schengen visa uses a 35×45mm ICAO photo. The UK Standard Visitor visa uses a 45×35mm format. They are different sizes and cannot be substituted for one another.
How should I store a digital photo for reuse across multiple visa applications?
Save the highest-resolution version as a JPEG in sRGB colour space. Store it with the date it was taken. Keep separately cropped versions for different format requirements (35×45mm, 51×51mm, 45×35mm). Check that the photo is still within the 6-month recency window before each submission.
