Tips for Baby & Child Passport Photos

Getting a compliant photo of a young baby or toddler takes a little preparation. These tips help you succeed on the first attempt.

Lay baby on a white sheet

Place your baby face-up on a plain white or light grey sheet and photograph from directly above. This gives a naturally plain background without requiring anyone to hold them.

Under 2: slight mouth and eye allowance

DFAT accepts photos of children under 2 where the mouth is slightly open or eyes are not fully open. Aim for eyes open, but do not reschedule repeatedly if your infant cannot cooperate.

Use diffuse natural light

Photograph near a window in soft daylight. Avoid overhead flash which creates harsh shadows across the face or bright spots on the forehead.

No other person in the frame

The photo must show only the child. If you hold the infant, ensure no hands, arms, or clothing are visible in the final crop. Use a white blanket to cover any visible parent.
