Getting a compliant photo of a baby or toddler requires patience and preparation. These practical tips reduce retakes.
Lay baby on a white sheet
Place your baby face-up on a plain white blanket and photograph from directly above. This creates a naturally white background and keeps the child still without requiring anyone to hold them.
Eyes open — aim for it, not perfect
IRCC requires eyes to be open, but very young infants may not fully cooperate. Aim for eyes open, and take many shots to find one where the eyes are at least partially open and both pupils are visible.
Use soft natural light
Position your baby near a bright window with diffuse daylight. Avoid direct flash which can overexpose the forehead or create red-eye. Soft even lighting gives better background contrast.
No other person in the frame
The photo must show only the child. If you hold the baby, ensure no hands, arms, or clothing appear in the final crop. Tuck a white blanket around the child to hide any parent support.
