Passport Photo Background – White vs Grey, Rules & Tips 2026

The background is one of the most common causes of passport photo rejection. This guide explains the ICAO standard, what white versus light grey actually means in practice, how the rules differ by country, and how to get a correct background at home.

The ICAO Standard: Plain, Uniform, Light-Coloured

ICAO Doc 9303, the international standard for machine-readable travel documents, requires that the background in a passport photo be:

  • Plain — no patterns, textures, or objects visible behind the subject
  • Uniform — consistent tone across the entire background, no gradients
  • Light-coloured — sufficiently bright to provide contrast with darker hair and skin tones
  • Shadow-free — no shadows cast by the subject or by uneven lighting

ICAO does not mandate a specific colour — it requires the background to be light and plain. Countries then implement this requirement with their own specific guidance, which is where white versus grey versus cream comes in.

White vs Off-White vs Light Grey: Which Is Correct?

This is a genuine source of confusion because different countries define “correct” slightly differently:

Pure white (hex #FFFFFF): Required by the US and South Korea. A completely neutral white background with no colour tint.

Light grey: Accepted by most European countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands) and Australia. A very pale grey — sometimes described as “off-white” — is also within the acceptable range for these countries.

Cream or light grey: The UK's HMPO specifically prefers cream or a light grey background. Interestingly, a pure white background can sometimes cause problems for very light-skinned subjects in the UK because the face outline becomes harder to detect against a pure white background in automated processing.

The practical rule: if you are applying for a US or South Korean passport, use pure white. For most other countries — including the UK, EU, and Australia — a plain light grey or off-white background is safe and preferred.

What Makes a Good Background

A background that meets passport photo requirements has four characteristics:

  • No patterns: Even subtle wall textures, fabric weaves, or painted patterns become visible in a high-resolution photo. Use a completely smooth surface.
  • No shadows: The most common background problem. If you stand too close to the background, your head and shoulders cast a shadow behind you. This is not retouchable in an accepted passport photo.
  • No gradients: Uneven lighting produces a lighter area near the light source and a darker area away from it. The background should be uniformly bright from edge to edge.
  • Uniform brightness: The background should be equally exposed across the entire image. Overexposed areas (blown-out white) or underexposed areas (grey patches) both cause problems.

Common Background Mistakes

Coloured wall background

Even a pale yellow or blue wall is rejected. Use white poster board or a blank white wall specifically.

Shadows behind the head or on the face

Stand 1–2m away from the background. Use front lighting from two directions to eliminate shadows.

Outdoor background or natural scenery

Always photograph against an indoor, plain surface. Outdoor backgrounds — sky, grass, walls — are not acceptable.

Visible fabric texture or wallpaper pattern

Use smooth, flat white poster board or a plain painted wall. Fabric backgrounds are too textured.

Gradient background from uneven lighting

Position two lights at 45-degree angles from either side of the subject. Avoid a single overhead or side light.

Subject's clothing similar in colour to the background

Wear a dark or coloured top against a white background so the body outline is clearly visible.

DIY Background Tips: How to Get It Right at Home

You do not need a photo studio to get a correct passport photo background. These simple techniques work reliably at home:

  • Use white poster board or foam board. A large sheet of white poster board (at least A2 size, 42×59cm) held or mounted behind the subject provides a clean, shadow-free background.
  • Stand 1–2 metres from the background. This is the single most effective way to prevent shadows. The further you stand from the background, the lighter and more shadow-free it appears.
  • Use two light sources. Position one light on each side of the subject at roughly 45 degrees. This creates even, flat lighting that eliminates directional shadows on both the face and the background.
  • Avoid backlighting. Do not stand with a window or bright light behind you — this silhouettes the subject and creates a gradient background.
  • Use natural daylight if possible. Position the subject facing a large window for diffused, even front lighting. Avoid direct sunlight, which is too harsh.

How AI Background Removal Helps

Even if your background is not perfect when you take the photo, AI background removal can replace it automatically with a plain white or light grey background that meets biometric standards.

ID Wizard uses AI background processing as part of its photo preparation flow. When you upload a photo, the tool:

  • Detects the face and body outline accurately
  • Replaces the original background with a correct plain white or light grey tone
  • Ensures uniform brightness — no gradients or patchy areas
  • Applies the correct background colour for your selected country

This means you can take your photo against an imperfect background and still get a compliant passport photo — as long as the original photo has good lighting on the face and the face itself is correctly positioned and expressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a light blue wall acceptable for a passport photo background?

No. Any coloured background — even a pale or pastel colour — is not acceptable. The background must be plain white or light grey.

Can I use a white bed sheet as a background?

Yes, if the sheet is flat enough to avoid visible wrinkles and folds. Hang the sheet flat against a wall and ensure it is evenly lit. Wrinkles create shadows and texture that may cause rejection.

Does the background have to be the same colour as the paper the photo is printed on?

No. The background colour is part of the image content. It can be white or light grey regardless of the paper used for printing.

My hair is very light blonde — will I be rejected against a white background?

Not necessarily, but this can create contrast problems in automated processing. A light grey background provides better contrast for light hair. This is one of the reasons the UK prefers cream or light grey over pure white.

Always verify current requirements with the official authority for your country.
