Natural Hair & Afro Hairstyles in Passport Photos – Rules 2026

Afro hair, locs, dreadlocks, braids, coils, and twist-outs are all permitted in passport photos. The international ICAO standard does not restrict hairstyles — it only requires that your full face is clearly visible. This guide explains exactly what that means in practice and offers tips for getting your natural hairstyle right in a biometric photo.

Short answer: All natural hairstyles are allowed.

There is no restriction on hair type, texture, or style in passport photos. Afro, locs, braids, coils, and any other natural hairstyle are fully permitted. The only requirement is that your full face must be visible — from forehead to chin and from ear to ear — without any hair covering or shadowing the face.

The ICAO Face-Visibility Rule Explained

The international passport photo standard (ICAO Doc 9303) focuses on one key requirement regarding hair: the full face must be visible. Specifically:

  • The forehead to chin must be fully visible — no hair covering the top or bottom of the face
  • Both ears should be visible or at least the face should be fully visible from side to side — no hair falling across the cheeks and covering the sides of the face in a way that hides the facial outline
  • No shadows cast by hair onto the face — even good hair positioning can cause a rejection if the hair creates a dark shadow across the forehead or cheeks

This rule applies equally to all hair types and textures. An afro, locs, braids, or coils that frame the face without obscuring it will pass the requirement. The same rule applies to straight, wavy, or curly hair — any hairstyle that covers part of the face or casts shadows on it can cause a rejection, regardless of hair type.

Natural Hairstyles That Are Completely Fine

Afro

An afro that frames the face with the full face visible from forehead to chin and ear to ear is completely acceptable. A very large afro that extends significantly to the sides is fine as long as the face itself is centred and unobscured.

Locs / Dreadlocks

Locs worn back, up, or to the side so the full face is visible are fully allowed. If locs fall forward across the face, pull them back or to the side before taking the photo.

Braids

Box braids, cornrows, and other braided styles are permitted. Braids that frame the face without falling across it are fine. Secure any loose braids away from the face.

Coils & Twist-outs

Defined coils and twist-outs are fully allowed. As with any style, ensure no coils fall across the forehead or cheeks in a way that covers or shadows the face.

Bantu knots

Bantu knots are allowed as long as they do not cast shadows on the forehead or face, and the full face remains visible.

Hairstyles That Need Attention

These styles are not banned, but they require some care to ensure the photo passes biometric checks:

!

Very large / wide afro

A very large afro can extend far beyond the sides of the frame. This is not a problem in itself, but make sure the face is still centred in the frame and fully visible. The AI check focuses on face position and visibility, not the width of the hair.

!

Braids falling across the face

Long braids that fall forward over the cheeks, forehead, or eyes will cause a rejection. Pull them to the back or side before taking the photo.

!

Locs creating face shadows

Long locs draped over the shoulders can cast shadows on the face if the lighting is not ideal. Position them behind the shoulders and make sure the face is evenly lit.

!

Tight hairstyles close to the face

Some updo or tied styles sit very close to the forehead and temples. Make sure no strands or hairline details fall across the face or create shadows.

Practical Tips for Natural Hair Passport Photos

1. Use even, diffuse lighting. Side lighting can cast shadows from voluminous hair onto the face. Face a window or use two light sources on either side to minimise shadows.

2. Check the frame before shooting. Your full face — from hairline to chin — should be clearly visible in the frame. Zoom out slightly if needed to avoid cropping the top of a large afro in a way that creates an unusual framing.

3. Secure loose strands. If you have any loose or flyaway strands, smooth or pin them back. A few loose hairs across the forehead can flag a rejection in automated checks.

4. Pull locs/braids behind the shoulders. Locs and braids look best in passport photos when worn behind the shoulders so they do not cast shadows on the chest area near the chin or on the face itself.

5. Use a plain white or light grey background. A good background helps the face stand out clearly, regardless of hair style or colour. Dark hair against a dark background can reduce face detection accuracy.

Hair Accessories: What Is Allowed

Small barrettes, hair pins, and clips are permitted in passport photos, provided they do not cover part of the face or distort the face silhouette.

Large hats, baseball caps, and wide headbands are not permitted, as they obscure the head shape used in biometric measurement. The exception applies to religious or medical head coverings (such as a hijab, turban, or kippah), which are allowed provided the full face from forehead to chin is clearly visible.

Is the Rule the Same in All Countries?

Yes. All major passport-issuing countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, all EU member states, Canada, Australia, and Switzerland — follow the same ICAO face-visibility principle. None of these countries restrict hair type or texture. The rule is consistent globally: face fully visible, no hair obscuring or shadowing the face area.

If you are applying for a passport in any of these countries, the natural hair guidance above applies. Always verify with the official authority if you have a specific concern about your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a large afro be rejected because it takes up too much of the frame?

No. A large afro is not a rejection reason in itself. The photo check focuses on face visibility and position, not hair size. As long as the full face is visible and centred, a large afro is completely fine.

My braids are very long and wide. Will that cause a problem?

Long, wide braids are allowed as long as the face is clearly visible. Position the braids behind the shoulders and make sure no braids fall across the face or cast shadows on it.

Can I wear a hair wrap or turban for religious reasons?

Yes. Religious and cultural head coverings are permitted in passport photos, provided the full face from forehead to chin is clearly visible. This applies in all major countries.

My hair creates a shadow on my forehead. How do I fix it?

Use even lighting from both sides to reduce shadows. Facing a large window often helps. Avoid taking your photo with a single overhead light source, which creates the most prominent hair shadows.
