Canadian Passport Photo Requirements 2026 – 50×70mm Format Guide

Canada uses a 50×70mm format for passport photos — a non-standard size that differs from the ICAO 35×45mm used in Europe, the UK, and most of the world. If you apply for a Canadian passport with a standard photo, your application will be rejected. This guide covers every IRCC requirement, digital submission options, and province-specific tips.

Important: Canada uses a non-standard 50×70mm format

Do not use a standard ICAO 35×45mm photo for a Canadian passport application. The required size is 50mm wide × 70mm tall. This is enforced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and applies to all Canadian passport and travel document applications worldwide.

Digital Photo Submission for Canadian Passports

IRCC accepts digital photo submissions for adult passport renewals through the online application portal. When submitting digitally, the photo file must:

  • Be in JPEG format
  • Have a minimum resolution of 420×560 pixels (equivalent to 50×70mm at 213 DPI)
  • Show the same composition as a printed photo — white or off-white background, head height in the correct range
  • Be taken within the last 6 months
  • Not be digitally altered beyond standard exposure adjustment and background removal

For in-person applications and first-time child passport applications, two identical printed photos are still required. One photo must have the back signed by your guarantor (a Canadian citizen who has known you for at least 2 years and holds a valid Canadian passport).

Provincial Considerations

Canadian passport photo requirements are set federally by IRCC and apply uniformly across all provinces and territories. However, provincial ID documents — such as driver's licences and health cards — have their own photo requirements set by each province:

  • Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta: Driver's licence photos are taken in-office at ServiceOntario / ICBC / registry agents. Online tools are not applicable.
  • Quebec: The Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) captures driver's licence photos directly. The 50×70mm passport format does not apply.

For the Canadian passport itself, IRCC rules apply nationwide. The 50×70mm format is required regardless of which province you apply in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Canada use a 50×70mm photo instead of the standard ICAO 35×45mm?

Canada chose the 50×70mm format as a national standard administered by IRCC. The larger format allows more head detail for biometric processing. This is a deliberate national policy and is not compatible with the ICAO 35×45mm standard used in the EU, UK, and most other countries.

Can I submit a digital photo for a Canadian passport?

Yes. IRCC accepts digital photo uploads through the online passport application portal for adults renewing their passport. The photo must still meet all size and quality standards — 50×70mm equivalent at the correct resolution. Printed photos (two copies) are required for in-person and paper applications.

Can I take my own Canadian passport photo at home?

Yes, home photos are permitted as long as they meet IRCC requirements: white or off-white plain background, good even lighting with no shadows on the face or background, neutral expression, eyes open and looking at the camera, and the correct 50×70mm dimensions with head height 31–36mm. Many applicants use a photo centre to ensure compliance.

Does Canada accept standard ICAO 35×45mm passport photos?

No. Canada does not accept the standard ICAO 35×45mm format for Canadian passport applications. The required format is 50×70mm. A 35×45mm photo will be rejected at the application stage.

Are religious head coverings allowed in Canadian passport photos?

Yes. Religious head coverings such as a hijab, turban, or kippah are permitted in Canadian passport photos provided the full face — from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear — remains clearly visible. Fashion hats, caps, and non-religious headwear are not allowed.

What are the Canadian passport photo requirements for a baby or child?

Children and babies must have their own passport with their own photo. The same 50×70mm format and quality rules apply. For very young infants, the baby may be placed on a white blanket — the background must still appear plain white or off-white. Parents or guardians must not appear in the photo. Eyes must be open.

Always verify current requirements with the official authority before submitting. IRCC photo requirements are subject to change. This guide is for informational purposes and is not a substitute for official IRCC guidance. Check canada.ca/passport for the latest instructions.
