Photo Size: 2×2 Inches — Why the US Uses a Square Format

The US uses a 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) square format for passports and most other travel documents. This differs from almost every other country in the world, which uses rectangular formats (typically 35×45 mm or 50×70 mm).

Within that square, your head (from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head) must measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm). That places the head between 50% and 69% of the total image height — ensuring your face is clearly visible without being too close or too far.

If you are submitting digitally, the minimum resolution is 600×600 pixels for the square crop, with a maximum file size of 11 MB. ID Wizard produces 300 DPI JPEG files at the correct 51×51 mm dimensions.

Background: Plain White Only

The State Department requires a plain white background. Unlike the UK (which uses cream or light grey), the US specifically requires white — not off-white, not light blue, not grey.

The background must be uniform with no shadows, patterns, or objects visible. There must be no shadow from your hair or clothing falling on the background. If you are taking the photo at home, ensure there is adequate space between you and the wall behind you — at least 30–60 cm (1–2 feet) — to avoid shadows.

Glasses: Not Allowed Since November 2016

Since November 1, 2016, the US State Department does not accept passport photos with glasses of any kind — prescription glasses, reading glasses, or sunglasses. This rule applies to all US passports, passport cards, and related travel documents.

Very rare exceptions may apply for people with a documented medical condition where glasses cannot be removed. In those cases, a signed statement from a medical professional is required. For the vast majority of applicants, remove glasses before taking the photo.

Expression and Head Position

The State Department allows either a neutral expression or a natural smile with both eyes open. This is slightly more permissive than some European countries which only allow a neutral expression.

Your head must be straight — no tilting left or right, no tilting back or forward. Look directly at the camera lens. The face must be centred within the square frame, and both ears should be visible (unless covered by religious head covering).

Babies and young children can look slightly away from the camera and may have their mouth open. The mouth closed requirement is relaxed for infants who cannot hold the expression.

Recency: Taken Within 6 Months

US passport photos must be taken within the last 6 months. The photo must show your current appearance — if you have significantly changed your appearance (major weight change, surgery, facial reconstruction), you may need a new photo even within that window.

Digital Photo for Online Passport Renewal

The State Department online renewal system (available to eligible US citizens) accepts digital passport photos. The photo must be:

  • JPEG format
  • Minimum 600×600 pixels (square)
  • Maximum 11 MB file size
  • Not digitally altered, filtered, or enhanced
  • Taken within the last 6 months
  • Same background, expression, and framing rules as printed photos

ID Wizard produces a 300 DPI JPEG at the correct 51×51 mm square dimensions — suitable for both online digital submission and printing at a drugstore (Walgreens, CVS, etc.) or at home.
