Which Countries Accept Online Passport Photos in 2026?

The global trend is strongly towards digital passport photo submission. Most countries now accept — or actively encourage — online biometric photos. Germany is the most notable exception, with a specific in-person capture requirement for its two main identity documents.

Quick summary

Switzerland, Austria, UK, US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Singapore all accept online passport photos. Germany requires PointID for Reisepass and Personalausweis — but online photos are accepted for German driving licences and visas.

The Global Shift to Digital Passport Photos

Passport applications have moved online in most countries over the past decade. Digital photo submission was initially limited to specific renewal workflows, but is now the default in many countries. The UK's HMPO was an early adopter; Australia and Canada have built digital photo submission into their standard application flows; and the US State Department has been rolling out online renewal with digital photo upload.

The key technical requirement — regardless of country — is that the submitted photo meets ICAO biometric standards: correct dimensions, white or light grey background, head centred and correctly sized, neutral expression, no glasses. Online tools that produce correctly formatted ICAO photos are therefore valid for submission in most countries.

Germany: What Is the BSI PointID System?

Germany's BSI (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik) introduced the PointID system to improve the biometric quality of photos in German passports (Reisepass) and national ID cards (Personalausweis).

Under PointID, a biometric passport photo for a Reisepass or Personalausweis must be captured and submitted through one of these certified channels:

  • A Bürgerbüro (citizens' office / Einwohnermeldeamt) with PointID equipment
  • A photo studio with BSI PointID accreditation
  • A compatible self-service kiosk (available at some offices and stations)

The system performs automated quality checks on the biometric photo before it is digitally submitted to the issuing authority. An online photo created at home cannot be submitted through PointID, regardless of its quality.

Importantly, PointID applies only to the Reisepass and Personalausweis. German driving licence (Führerschein) photos, visa photos, and residence permit photos are not subject to this restriction.

Digital Photo Technical Requirements

Where online photo submission is accepted, most authorities specify:

  • File format: JPEG / JPG (some portals also accept PNG)
  • Minimum dimensions: Typically 400×514px or 600×600px depending on the country. The ICAO digital standard for passport photos is 400×514px at 300 DPI.
  • File size: Usually between 50 KB and 10 MB. Check the specific portal — UK HMPO has a 10 MB limit; Australian DFAT has tighter constraints.
  • Colour space: sRGB. Do not submit photos in CMYK colour space.
  • Head proportion: Face (chin to crown) should occupy 70–80% of the photo height — same as the printed standard.
  • Background: White or light grey as required by the country. Singapore requires pure white — no off-white or light grey.
