Lay baby on a white sheet
Place your baby face-up on a plain white or cream sheet and photograph from directly above. This gives a naturally plain background without needing anyone to hold them.
Use natural light
Photograph near a window in diffuse daylight. Avoid harsh direct sunlight or flash that causes harsh shadows across the face.
Time it well
Take the photo after a feed when your baby is calm and awake. A content, alert baby is more likely to have open eyes and a neutral expression.
No parent in frame
HMPO requires the photo to show only the child. If a parent holds the baby, make sure no hands, arms, or clothing are visible in the final crop.
