Most countries use the international ICAO standard: a 35×45mm rectangle. The United States uses a 2×2 inch (51×51mm) square format — a legacy specification that predates widespread ICAO adoption. Despite the different outer dimensions, the head-size requirements are comparable: the face must fill 70–80% of the frame in both cases.

US passport photos must be exactly 2×2 inches (51×51mm) — a square format. This is different from the ICAO standard used in most other countries (35×45mm rectangle). The head height must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25–35mm) measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
